I am an Art History Student in St Andrews but
hope to pursue textiles and sewing after I graduate. I developed this technique
during my years studying A Level and have spent the last few summer ‘tweeking’
it! So here is a brief summary of how I create these pieces!
The background of each work is layers of
paper, sheet music and strips of paper which is then covered with lace, which
has been manipulated and sometimes burnt (with a heat gun) in order to make it
more tactile and rougher. I always use flowered lace, as my original
inspiration came from Francis Hodgson Burnett's The Secret Garden and
especially the rather philosophical quote that 'Where you tend a rose, a
thistle cannot grow' (which I love). I love how Burnett presents nature as
possessing healing qualities, but not medicinal healing, rather spiritual
healing in the novel.
I use all my own
photograph's (unless the work is a commission) and have recently become
more interested in architecture. I free-machine the photo’s which
have been printed onto glossy photo-paper, onto the canvas and the final touch
is to add all the buttons. I developed my technique from looking at the process
of a variety of contemporary textile artists, especially Hollie Caley, Rosie James, Claire Coles,
and Clare
Hillerby. I especially love the
work of Linda Young, her sewn roses are just fabulous.
If you are interested in my
artwork, or would like to commission a piece (as I use photographs, I can use
family, wedding, pet photos) please get in contact! My email address is hannah.sycamore@hotmail.co.uk.
